KINANTHI SEMEDI

Translated and annotated by Joan Suyenaga, Yogyakarta, 1983

This episode is during the battle between Rama’s combined forces and Ngalengka. In this version, the monkey army has been attacked and many lie wounded. Laksmana is also wounded. Hanoman meditates and is visited by Narada who informs him that the way to revive Laksmana is by applying a leaf which he will find growing on the slopes of the Malyawan mountains.

Wong agung mangsah semèdi
Sirep kang bala wanara
Sadaya wus sami guling
Nadyan ari Sudarsana
Wus dangu nggènira guling.

In the night, a great man meditated.
The monkey army slept peacefully.
Even Sudarsana’s younger brother slept.

The handsome one cleared his heart.
Although enclosed within a large area
(his thoughts) were concentrated.

3. Kagyat risang kapirangu

The hesitant one (the one meditating) is startled.
He is hugged tightly.
[Narada speaks:] "Oh, gem of the world,
it is you who worries,
whose heart is sad,
who is ill."

forgetting that you are a famous leader in the world,
enjoying this forgetfulness and doubt?"

"I carry a message from Bathara Guru.
Bathara Suksma is sent on an errand
to give you this sacred plant
which can revive life to people all over the world."

place a leaf of this sacred plant
over the victim’s head to revive him."

The plant is at a hermitage
at the foot of Malyawan mountain.
That is all. I leave you, grandchild."
Narada ascended to heaven.

All of the monkey army was sent
to return together to the cave Kiskendha.
Not one was allowed to stay behind.

Gerongan

Gerongan adalah suatu tembang yang disuarakan oleh wiraswara pada waktu gending melantun.
